"The goal is not simply to install a garden, but to shape an environment that matures with character and integrity."

Each project begins with careful listening — to the site, to the architecture, and to how a family actually moves through their outdoor space. What follows is a design process that balances ecological intelligence with refined aesthetic judgment.

Garden approach
The Approach

Context First. Aesthetics Always.

Every garden I design begins with an honest reading of place — sun patterns, soil, topography, views, and the architecture that frames outdoor life. This context becomes the foundation from which spatial form and planting composition emerge.

Environmental horticulture informs every plant selection, ensuring that what looks beautiful on day one performs beautifully for decades. I work in close collaboration with each client, translating vision into environments that feel grounded, balanced, and genuinely theirs.

For Marin homeowners who value both craft and sustainability, this means gardens that are as considered as the homes they surround — water-wise, ecologically sound, and refined in every detail.

What I Offer

Services

Custom garden design
01

Custom Garden Design

Site-specific landscape design shaped by the particulars of your property, architecture, lifestyle, and environment. The result is a coherent spatial vision — one that will perform beautifully across seasons and decades.

I work with you from concept through construction documents, ensuring that every decision reflects both ecological intelligence and aesthetic intention.

  • Site analysis — soil, drainage, irrigation, sun and exposure
  • Concept development and design narrative
  • Planting plans with regionally appropriate species
  • Hardscape layout and material specification
  • Kitchen gardens, herb gardens, and edible landscapes
  • Water management and irrigation planning (QWEL certified)
  • Contractor coordination and installation oversight
Pruning and care
02

Specialty Pruning & Care

A garden's character deepens through skilled, consistent stewardship. I offer seasonal refinement services focused on plant health, structural form, and long-term performance — going well beyond routine maintenance.

This work is guided by an understanding of how each plant grows and what it needs to thrive — pruning for structure, light, and airflow rather than simply cutting back what's overgrown.

  • Formative and maintenance pruning
  • Seasonal plant health assessments
  • Pest and disease identification and management (IPM)
  • Pesticide-minimized care protocols
  • Pollinator habitat support
  • Deadheading, dividing, and succession planting
Landscape consultation

Landscape Consultations

Sometimes you don't need a full redesign — you need clear, expert guidance on what to do next. Consultations are structured conversations about your outdoor space, delivered with honesty and specificity.

You'll leave with a clear path forward, whether that means a single planting edit or a phased plan for full redevelopment.

  • Site walkthrough and assessment
  • Planting edits and removal recommendations
  • Plant identification and care guidance
  • Redesign scoping and phasing advice
  • Second opinions on contractor proposals
  • Long-term care calendars and maintenance plans
How We Work Together

The Process

01

Discovery

We begin with a site visit and conversation — understanding how you live, what you love, and what your land is asking for.

02

Concept

A spatial and planting concept is developed, shaped by site conditions, aesthetic direction, and your way of inhabiting outdoor space.

03

Design

Refined plans, plant lists, and material specifications are prepared — everything needed to build with confidence and clarity.

04

Implementation

I remain engaged through installation and beyond, ensuring the garden is planted with care and set up for long-term success.

Alexandra Kala — Studio Kala
About

Alexandra Kala

I'm a Marin County–based landscape designer with a foundation in environmental horticulture — the science of how plants grow, how ecosystems function, and how thoughtful design can support both.

Studio Kala is a small, intentional practice. I take on a limited number of projects each year to ensure that each one receives the attention and craft it deserves.

My work is for homeowners who want a garden that reflects how they actually live — beautiful, purposeful, and built to last.

Philosophy

Resilience Without Sacrificing Beauty

I believe that sustainability and beauty are not in tension — they are the same thing, when design is done well. A garden that ignores climate, water, and long-term plant performance will never look as good as one that works with these forces rather than against them.

Every project is designed around water use, sun and exposure, seasonal extremes, and long-term plant health — while maintaining a refined, cohesive visual language that reflects the character of the property and the people who live there.

For Marin homeowners, this often means drought-adapted California natives and Mediterranean plants, generous structure through stone and form, and a planting composition that shifts and deepens through the seasons.

Practice

Craft at Every Scale

Studio Kala operates at the intersection of ecological knowledge and design sensibility. I bring the same rigor to a plant selection that an architect brings to a material specification — considering texture, seasonality, growth habit, and ecological function alongside pure visual effect.

I prioritize integrated pest management, pollinator-supportive planting, and regionally appropriate plant palettes. The gardens I design are not high-maintenance showpieces — they are considered environments that reward skilled, attentive care without demanding it.

My hands-on background spans historic restoration work at Alcatraz Island's gardens — one of the most demanding coastal environments in the Bay Area — and managing productive orchard and edible garden systems for private estates. That range, from ornamental restoration to food-producing landscapes, informs how I approach every project: with practical knowledge of how plants actually live, not just how they look on a plan.

Working with a small studio means working directly with me at every stage. There are no handoffs, no intermediaries. Your garden reflects a singular vision, developed in close collaboration with you.

Studio Kala mission
The Goal

Environments That Mature With Character

A well-designed garden is not a finished object — it is a living system that evolves with grace. I design with this time horizon in mind, making choices that serve the garden at year one, year five, and year twenty.

The work strengthens ecological resilience at the scale of the home and community. It enhances property value. And it quietly elevates daily life — a cup of coffee in a garden that feels right is a small, real, daily gift.
